Picking up at Denver International Airport
DEN's rental companies are in off-airport lots. Free shuttle buses leave from Level 5 of the terminal (Island 4 on the east and west sides). Give yourself an extra 30-45 minutes for the shuttle and the counter, and more on Friday afternoons and Saturdays in ski season. Downtown Denver and Colorado Springs (COS) have rental offices too, and COS is worth checking if you're going to Pikes Peak.

Do you need AWD or 4WD in Colorado?
- From June to August, any car is fine on the Front Range and paved park roads, including Trail Ridge Road and the Pikes Peak Highway.
- From September to May in the mountains, book an AWD/4WD SUV, or at least confirm the car has M+S or winter tires. Snow can arrive in September above 9,000 feet.
- Rental contracts usually forbid driving on dirt and jeep roads, so take a guided jeep tour instead.
Most rental companies won't guarantee a specific model, and many standard rental tires are all-season, not winter tires. If winter driving is important to you, choose an AWD/4WD category and check the tire policy before you pay.
Colorado's Passenger Vehicle Traction Law
From September 1 to May 31, the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law applies on I-70 between Dotsero (MP 133) and Morrison (MP 259), and CDOT can activate it on other mountain highways. CDOT retired the old "Code 15" / "Code 16" labels: Code 15 is now the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law; Code 16 is the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law (chains or an approved ATD on every passenger vehicle in severe storms).
Under the current rules (including SB25-069): 2WD vehicles must carry chains or an approved ATD Sept 1 to May 31 and install them when the Traction Law is active. Tires alone no longer cover 2WD. 4WD/AWD can comply with M+S, all-weather or mountain-snowflake tires with at least 3/16-inch tread, or with chains/ATDs. Check conditions at COtrip.org and the rules at Colorado State Patrol and CDOT. Updated Oct 2026.
One-way rentals to ski towns
Picking up at DEN and dropping off in a mountain town can be handy, but one-way fees can be steep and mountain locations have small fleets and short hours. Compare that with an airport shuttle if you won't need a car in town: Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone and Aspen are all walkable with free local buses.
How to save on a Colorado rental
- Book early for ski holidays (Christmas, Presidents' Day, March spring break) and summer weekends, then re-check prices; many bookings are free to cancel.
- Compare an off-airport city location, since DEN rentals include airport concession fees.
- Check whether your credit card or travel insurance already covers rental damage before buying extra coverage.
- Skip the ski rack and rent skis in town if you can.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 4WD rental car in Colorado?
Not in summer for paved roads. From September to May, book AWD/4WD with M+S or winter tires for the mountains. 2WD rentals must carry chains or an approved ATD under the current Traction Law, and tires alone are not enough for 2WD.
What is the Colorado traction law?
From September 1 to May 31 on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison (and when CDOT activates it elsewhere), 4WD/AWD vehicles need M+S, all-weather or mountain-snowflake tires with at least 3/16-inch tread, or chains/ATDs. 2WD vehicles must carry and install chains or an approved ATD when the Traction Law is on. Tires alone no longer cover 2WD (SB25-069). The old Code 15/16 names are retired.
Where do I pick up a rental car at Denver airport?
DEN's rental companies are off-airport. Free company shuttles leave from Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, Island 4.
Can I rent a car at DEN and return it in a ski town?
Often yes, but one-way fees can be high and mountain locations have limited cars and hours. Compare against a shared or private airport shuttle.
How far are the ski resorts from Denver airport?
Roughly 2 hours to Breckenridge, Keystone or Vail without traffic, and about 3.5-4 hours to Aspen by road. Weekend ski traffic and storms can add hours.
